2 die in Niger mining pit collapse

Two persons have been confirmed dead after a mining pit collapsed at Farin-Doki in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident on Monday, April 14, 2015.

Abiodun said the pit collapsed on Sunday, April 13, trapping two miners identified as Buhari Kano and Mallam Tasiu, both from Kano State.

Abiodun disclosed that police operatives from Erena Division and local residents quickly rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts.

He stated: “Sadly, the victims were found lifeless and their bodies were taken to Zumba hospital for further examination.

“Preliminary findings suggest the victims were illegally mining at the site on the night before the collapse.”

Abiodun added that an investigation into the incident was ongoing to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding the mining pit collapse.
