2023: Okupe withdraws as Labour Party VP candidate

Former presidential spokesperson, Doyin Okupe, has announced his withdrawal as the running of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, for the 2023 general election.

Okupe, who is the Director-General of Peter Obi Campaign Organisation, announced his withdrawal as the party’s vice-presidential candidate via a tweet on his Twitter handle on Thursday.

The former presidential aide stated that the national chairman of the Labour Party would announce Obi’s running mate for the 2023 presidential election soon.

Okupe tweeted: “This afternoon I submitted my withdrawal letter from the position of the Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party to INEC.

“A replacement will be announced by the national chairman of d party shortly. I feel greatly blessed to hv been part of the foundation of success for the LP.”

The Star had reported that Okupe was named as the party’s vice-presidential candidate to beat the deadline by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

It would be recalled that INEC set June 17, 2022, as the deadline for political parties in the country to submit the list of their candidates and running mates (presidential and governorship).

Okupe had said he was standing in as Obi’s running mate, noting that discussions were ongoing to choose a substantive vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
