2023: Peter Obi emerges Labour Party presidential candidate

Former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party for the 2023 general election.

Obi emerged as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate at the party’s convention and presidential primaries held in Asaba, the Delta State capital on Monday.

The former governor became the party’s presidential candidate after his challengers, including Prof. Pat Utomi and Joseph Faduri stepped down for him.

The latest development is coming barely three days after Obi joined Labour Party.

Before his defection, he was a presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Obi, in a letter addressed to the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, said the recent developments within the PDP made it impossible for him to continue his presidential ambition on the platform of the main opposition party.

He was the party’s running mate to PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the 2019 presidential election.

The former governor, in a series of tweets on his verified Twitter handle, last Friday, expressed his appreciation to youths, saying he has chosen a route he considered to be in line “with our aspirations and my mantra of taking the country from consumption to production”.

Obi stated: “I thank all Nigerians, especially our youths who have joined me in the mission of taking back and reuniting Nigeria.

“This project is yours and for the future of your children. I am just a facilitator.

“Therefore, I have chosen a route that I consider to be in line with our aspirations and my mantra of taking the country from consumption to production; and that is the Labour Party which is synonymous with the people, workers, development, production, securing and uniting Nigerians as one family.

“I invite all Nigerians to join me in taking back our country. Be assured that I’ll never let you down,” he had said.
