Former First Lady of Ondo State, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has joined the Labour Party and declared her intention to contest for the Imo East Senatorial seat in the 2027 general election.
Akeredolu made this known after attending the LP’s National Executive Council (NEC) and stakeholders’ meeting held at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
She described her decision to join the Labour Party in Imo State as a return to where she “truly belongs.”
Akeredolu, in a statement shared on Facebook, commended the party’s leadership for organising a well-structured and inclusive meeting, noting that the large turnout reflected growing interest in the party.
According to her, the clearly defined leadership positions across state, local government, and ward levels demonstrate the party’s commitment to internal democracy.
The former First Lady lauded the introduction of the Deputy Chairman (Female) position, describing it as a bold step towards empowering women in Nigerian politics. She noted that such a move goes beyond symbolic inclusion and gives women real decision-making power.
Akeredolu also highlighted the significance of the Labour Party being led by Nenadi Usman, describing it as a historic development that signals progress for women’s leadership in Nigeria.
Calling on women across the country to take advantage of the opportunity, she urged greater female participation in politics, stressing that women’s leadership can foster more compassionate and people-oriented governance.
She further recommended a review of the party’s “Papa, Mama, Pikin” logo to reflect gender balance by including a female child, saying such symbolism is important in promoting equality.
Akeredolu expressed confidence in her senatorial ambition, pledging to contribute to national development through inclusive representation if elected.
Akeredolu sought the Imo East senatorial ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2023 elections but withdrew from the party’s primary, citing irregularities in the process.
