2027: Ambode backs Hamzat as Lagos APC consensus guber candidate

Former Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has thrown his weight behind the Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat following his emergence as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Ambode, in a statement issued on Thursday, April 30, 2026, congratulated Hamzat, describing his emergence as a reflection of loyalty, hard work, and long-standing dedication to the APC.

He noted that Hamzat’s extensive consultations with party leaders and members demonstrated his commitment to the ideals of unity and progress.

Ambode expressed confidence in Hamzat’s capacity to govern Lagos effectively, citing his wealth of experience and administrative competence as key assets that would benefit the state.

“Your adoption as our party’s consensus candidate is a reflection of your loyalty, hardwork and dedication to the party for over two decades. I am sure that our State will benefit immensely from your wealth of experience and skills in governance,” he stated.

The former governor also reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu, pledging commitment to his re-election bid.

Ambode linked the continued development of Lagos and Nigeria to Tinubu’s leadership, expressing optimism that the president’s policies would deliver growth and prosperity.

He called on party members across Lagos to mobilise support ahead of forthcoming elections, urging them to work towards delivering a decisive victory for the APC at both state and federal levels.

Ambode further set an ambitious target of at least three million votes for Tinubu from Lagos, while stressing the need for the APC to retain all its National Assembly seats in the state.

The former governor said: “We are ready to roll up our sleeves and work to deliver landslide victories for our party at both the state and federal levels as the process unfolds.

“As Lagos APC, our mission should be to deliver at least 3 million votes for Mr. President and support other States in Southwest to deliver great results. We must return all our party-nominated senators and representatives to the National Assembly.”
