The Lagos State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has vowed to reclaim Kano State in the 2027 general elections, despite the recent defection of its only governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Richard Benson, stated this in an interview with the newsmen on Tuesday in Lagos, assuring that Yusuf’s departure would not weaken the party.
“Let him go; it will not affect us as a party at all. Yes, we will miss him, but it will not impact our strength,” Benson said.
“Come 2027, we are taking Kano back. We are very confident we can reclaim the state.”
Benson emphasized that the party’s influence in Kano is rooted in the Kwankwasiyya movement, not merely in holding government positions.
“Our stronghold is not about the government of Kano; it is about Kwankwasiyya as a movement.
“That movement has changed things in Kano, and we still retain that stronghold,” he said.
Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Benson said the party overcame all odds to defeat the ruling APC and expressed confidence that history would repeat itself in 2027.
“Despite all odds and federal might in 2023, we won. We will pull through again. History will rewrite itself,” he declared.
NAN reports that Yusuf officially joined the APC on January 23, bringing along most of his commissioners, Kano NNPP federal and state lawmakers, all 44 elected local government chairmen and their deputies, as well as local ward executives.
