Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has coordinated and submitted the party’s list of candidates for elective positions across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso led the exercise in collaboration with the party’s National Working Committee and candidates from the region.
The process was concluded on Thursday, August 20, 2026, with the formal submission of the candidates’ names to the NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson.
In a statement after the exercise, the former Kano State governor described the submission as a major step in the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
He commended Dickson, members of the NWC and the candidates for their cooperation and commitment throughout the process.
“This is more than just the completion of a submission process. It is another step towards building a formidable NDC team capable of competing strongly at every level,” Kwankwaso said.
He said the exercise reflected the party’s determination to build a united political structure capable of representing the interests of Nigerians across the region.
The affected states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara, alongside the FCT.
Kwankwaso and Peter Obi joined the NDC in May after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The party subsequently endorsed Obi as its presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as his running mate at a special convention in Abuja.
As part of his political messaging ahead of the 2027 elections, Kwankwaso has called for a shift from divisive politics to competent and accountable governance.
He cited rising food prices, unemployment, insecurity and increasing business costs as challenges requiring urgent attention.
“Our farmers need security to return to their farms, our children need safe schools, and every Nigerian deserves to live without fear,” he said.
Kwankwaso also advocated greater investment in education, healthcare and infrastructure, alongside improved transparency in the management of public resources.
Defending his partnership with Obi, he said the alliance was based on a national agenda rather than regional, religious or personal interests.
“Our partnership is not about region, religion or personal ambition. It is about Nigeria,” he said.
He urged Nigerians, particularly young people, women, workers, farmers and business owners, to participate actively in the 2027 electoral process and campaign peacefully.
Kwankwaso said the NDC remained focused on working with its candidates and leaders to achieve its objectives in the election.
