2027: Kwankwaso visits Obasanjo in Kano

The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Thursday visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his temporary residence in Kano State, fuelling fresh speculation over political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso was accompanied by the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

The meeting, held behind closed doors, was confirmed by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, who described it as a courtesy visit but did not disclose details of the discussions.

In a post on X, Hassan said Obasanjo, who is currently in Kano on an official assignment, received the NDC leaders for what he described as “warm exchanges and constructive discussions.”

Although the purpose of the meeting was not made public, it has drawn political attention amid increasing talks of possible alliances ahead of the next general election.

“His Excellency, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, PhD, FNSE, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the NDC, last night paid a courtesy visit to elder statesman and former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, at his temporary residence in Kano,” Hassan wrote.

He added that Kwankwaso was accompanied by Gwarzo during the visit.

Obasanjo and Kwankwaso have maintained a long-standing political relationship dating back to 2003, when the former president appointed Kwankwaso as Minister of Defence during his second term in office.
