2027: Makinde debunks defection rumours, says PDP remains party to contest

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains the only platform that all aspirants for various political seats would contest during the 2027 general election.

Makinde made this known during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Monday night.

The governor maintained that his political structure still remained in the PDP, saying there was no plan to defect to another party.

He added that all first-term lawmakers currently serving at both the National Assembly and the State Houses of Assembly would secure the tickets unopposed.

He further disclosed that the PDP would adopt a consensus-based approach in the selection of candidates for the governorship position and others.

Makinde underscored the importance of party unity and internal cohesion as critical to sustaining the party’s dominance in Oyo State.

Speaking on the outcome of the Monday meeting, a chieftain of the PDP in Ibadan, Adamolekun Ayinde, said the governor should focus more on the ongoing reconciliation process.

Ayinde said what should be paramount to Makinde now should be how the two factions would reconcile to pave way for successful outing in 2027.

He stated that the issue of automatic ticket to the one-term national and state lawmakers should not be, due to the current fragile position of the party in Oyo State.

He, however, said the adoption of consensus candidates for the governorship position and others would be good provided the two factions agreed after reconciliation.
