2027 polls: IG Disu promises Nigerians professional police conduct

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has assured Nigerians that the conduct of police personnel during the 2027 general elections will make citizens proud of the Force.

Disu gave the assurance after a conference with commissioners of police and other senior officers, saying the Force had reviewed lessons from previous elections to improve its performance.

The police chief spoke with journalists after the launch of The Origin of Women in Nigeria Police Force, a book written by 96-year-old retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dame Stella Okuyiga, in honour of the pioneering female officers of the Force.

Addressing concerns about police conduct during the 2027 polls, Disu said the Force had brought together experiences from recent elections to identify areas that required improvement.

“We have now brought all these experiences together, where we did well and where we did not do well, so that we can perform better in this big election that everybody is looking up to,” he said.

The IG added, “I give you my word. Nigeria Police will do so well, and we will make Nigeria Police so proud, and we will make Nigerians proud.”

Disu’s assurance comes as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections, with police conduct expected to be crucial to public confidence in the electoral process.

On Okuyiga’s book, the police chief described the publication as an important record of the Force’s institutional history, noting that the retired officer was among the first 20 female officers recruited into the Nigeria Police Force in 1955.

He said the Force would obtain copies of the book for its training institutions to preserve the experiences of its pioneer female officers for future generations.

“Mama is 96 years old, and she has taken her time to put all her experience, institutional knowledge that she has down in the book for us to be able to study it for the generations coming,” Disu said.

He added that the initiative reflected the Force’s resolve to preserve its history and recognise the contributions of its members.

Okuyiga expressed delight that the book would preserve her experiences and allow her legacy to endure beyond her lifetime.

She said the publication would be available in libraries around the world, giving future generations an opportunity to learn about the history of women in the police.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Dagogo Wokoma, formally launched the book with a donation of N20m.
