A Kano State High Court has sentenced a 22-year-old man, Sagiru Rijiyar-Zaki, to death by hanging for stabbing his stepmother, Rabiatu Sagir, and strangling his sister, Munawara, with scarf to death.
Rijiyar-Zaki was convicted of culpable homicide.
Delivering judgement on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the presiding judge, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu, declared that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Justice Adamu-Aliyu, therefore, sentenced Rijiyar-Zaki to death by hanging.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, informed the court that the convict committed the offence on at Rijiyar Zaki Quarters in Kano on January 7, 2023.

He said at about 8 p.m., Rijiyar-Zaki caused the death of his stepmother by stabbing her in the neck with a screwdriver after a misunderstanding and also strangled his sister with her scarf.
The lawyer presented two witnesses and tendered exhibits to prove the case against the defendant.

The 22-year-old man, however, denied committing the offence.
According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 221(a) of the Penal Code Law of Kano State, 1991.
