23 killed, 108 injured in triple IED blasts in Maiduguri

No fewer than 23 people have been confirmed dead and 108 others injured following three suspected suicide Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosions in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The incident occurred at about 7:24 p.m. on Monday at three different locations in the city — the Maiduguri Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office Flyover.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, preliminary investigations indicate that the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers.

Police said the explosions resulted in significant casualties, with 23 people losing their lives while 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Following the attacks, a joint team of police tactical units, the military and other security agencies were deployed to the affected locations. The areas were immediately secured and cordoned off while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit conducted thorough sweep operations to ensure no additional explosive devices were left behind.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the scenes of the explosions to assess the situation and review ongoing response efforts. He also commiserated with the victims and their families, assuring residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, evacuated victims to nearby medical facilities where they are currently receiving treatment.

Police said normalcy has since been restored in the affected areas, while security presence and surveillance have been intensified across Maiduguri and surrounding communities to prevent further incidents.

The command added that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attacks and bring those responsible to justice.
