7 arrested at Kano airport for drug trafficking

No fewer than seven suspects have been arrested for drug trafficking between May and June at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano.

The Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the airport, Sani Abubakar, disclosed this at the commemoration of Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking in Kano on Friday.

The event was held with the theme, ‘Addressing Drug Challenges in Health and Humanitarian Crisis’.

The United Nations had set aside June 24 to commemorate 2022 Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking to sensitise people.

According to Abubakar, the suspects were arrested with Indian hemp, tramadol, pentazocine, and khat, among others, and would soon be prosecuted.

“They were arrested at the airport while attempting to smuggle drugs into the country.

“A total of 470.21 kilograms of drugs were seized from the suspects.

“NDLEA operatives are determined to thwart attempts at using the airport for drug trafficking,” he said.

The NDLEA Commander further stated that increased personnel, provision of logistics, and improved staff welfare contributed to the recent successes the anti-drug agency has been making.
