No fewer than seven people were injured as a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, said workers at the building site were victims of the collapse and had been taken to hospital for treatment.
Speaking on the collapse, the Ondo State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Sunday Olajide, said investigations would be launched to uncover both the immediate and long-term cause of the incident.
Olajide warned developers in Ondo State to desist from using substandard building materials and advised them to prioritise the safety of residents.
He tasked developers to always secure the necessary permits and approvals before carrying out construction projects.
The commissioner added that the Ondo State Government had sealed off the construction site to take further action based on the outcome of the investigation.
