No fewer than seven inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in the Ilesa area of Osun State.
It was gathered that the inmates escaped from the correctional centre after a damage to the facility’s perimeter wall caused by heavy rainfall.
The spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Abubakar Umar, confirmed the incident via a statement issued on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
Umar said the NCoS Controller General, Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.

Umar disclosed that the incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday and led to a breach in the prison’s security infrastructure.
He added that the Service was collaborating with other security agencies and community leaders in a bid to recapture the fleeing inmates.
“The NCoS is committed to ensuring the escapees are returned to lawful custody. We are also working to reinforce the facility’s security to prevent further occurrences,” he said.
The NCoS spokesman urged members of the public to provide credible information that could aid the recapture efforts.
