The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has presented an Award of Excellence in the Development of Media Infrastructure to Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno.

Eno was honoured by the NUJ at the union’s Awards/Dinner marking the 70th anniversary celebrations of the professional body on Saturday night.

The event was held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

Eno, who was represented by the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, tasked the union to ensure the sustenance of development journalism that would enhance the growth of society and further ensure that the dynamics of technology-driven information dissemination through Artificial Intelligence is not a threat to the traditional media.

Umanah reaffirmed the commitment of Eno in ensuring a free press in Akwa Ibom State, continued support to the development of media infrastructure, and the continuous support of the media in projecting and promoting the ARISE Agenda of the governor’s administration.

The guest lecturer at the anniversary dinner, Prof. Tunde Akanni of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Lagos State University, appraised the problems and prospects of journalism practice in the age of Artificial Intelligence and tasked media professionals not to be pushed aside by evolving technology in the course of discharging their duties.

Some of the award recipients were Governors Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), and Abba Yusuf (Kano).

Others include Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) and Nasir Idris (Kebbi).

The NUJ also honoured the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, former presidents and secretaries of the union, past and present president of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), among others.
