9 dead, 4,524 displaced in Kano rainstorms

Nine people have died and 4,524 others have been displaced by rainstorms and windstorms across eight local government areas of Kano State between January and August 2026.

The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Isyaku Kubarachi, disclosed the figures on Thursday, saying 49 people also sustained injuries in the disasters.

Kubarachi said the affected local government areas were Gaya, Ajingi, Rimin Gado, Minjibir, Kabo, Bichi, Shanono and Kibiya.

He said the storms were responsible for the highest number of casualties and displaced persons among the six major disasters recorded across the state during the eight-month period.

According to the agency’s assessment, Bichi recorded the highest number of affected residents with 775, while 712 people were affected in Minjibir and 630 in Kibiya.

Shanono recorded 530 victims, followed by Ajingi with 415 and Gaya with 342. Rimin Gado recorded 233 affected persons, while Kabo had 102.

Kubarachi said SEMA had assessed the affected communities and submitted detailed reports to the state government for necessary intervention.

He said relief assistance would be distributed to victims once materials were made available to the agency.

“The agency had compiled comprehensive reports and submitted them to the state government for assistance to victims. As soon as we receive relief materials, they will be distributed to them,” he said.

The development has renewed concerns over the impact of extreme weather events on communities across Kano, particularly during the rainy season.

It also follows a resolution by the Kano State House of Assembly urging the government to provide relief materials to residents affected by rainstorms and other disasters.

The resolution was reached on July 29 after lawmakers adopted a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Bichi Constituency, Lawan Shehu.

The sitting was presided over by the Speaker of the House, Jibril Falgore.
