The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has extended the service year of Ms. Rita Ushie, popularly known on social media as Raye, by two months for breaching the scheme’s code of conduct.
Raye, a corps member and Instagram influencer, recently posted a viral video online in which she openly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration over issues such as fuel subsidy removal, rising cost of living, and growing insecurity.
The NYSC cited her comments as a violation of its rules on political neutrality and public conduct.
According to insiders, the extension of her service year was a disciplinary measure aimed at reinforcing the NYSC’s commitment to its non-partisan stance.
The scheme mandates corps members to refrain from making public political statements or engaging in acts deemed capable of sparking controversy or inciting the public.
Raye’s video triggered mixed reactions across social media platforms, with many praising her courage while others accused her of crossing professional boundaries.
The NYSC’s action has further stirred debate on the extent of free speech allowed for corps members, especially in the age of digital influence.
