A group of 15 graduating students from Brilliant Footsteps International Academy in Sokoto State have built a fully functional electric car as their final-year project, drawing praise for their innovation and hands-on skills.
The students—10 girls and five boys—developed the vehicle from the ground up with technical support from the Micro Electric Vehicle Company.
The project was officially presented on Saturday, with Professor Shadi Sabeh, the school’s General Managing Director and Vice-Chancellor of ICONIC Open University, describing it as a breakthrough in practical education.
“This initiative is a strong message that functional education is possible in Africa,” Sabeh said.
“We’re committed to bridging the gap between theory and practice by equipping students with real-life skills.”
He noted that the project reflects the untapped potential in Nigerian schools and offers a glimpse of what the continent could achieve by investing in its youth.
“This tells a powerful story of hope.
“Instead of relying on imported vehicles, we’re training students to become creators and innovators,” he added.
Sabeh emphasized that all materials used for the car were sourced locally, significantly cutting down costs.
He also said the car had the strength to compete with conventional vehicles in terms of durability and safety.
Speaking on behalf of the team, students Ahmed Shadi, Yusuf Gandi, and Aisha Ahmed detailed the vehicle’s structure, which includes three main sections: mechanical, electrical, and bodywork.
They said the electric car passed all necessary safety and durability tests.
The team also highlighted the design of the battery system, which they said was optimized for safety and performance, offering a charge that lasts between six and seven hours.
The project has been hailed as a shining example of youth innovation and a call for more practical learning in Nigeria’s education system.
