The Kano Strategic Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 49 people for various drug-related offences following a series of raids across the state.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, said in a statement on Wednesday that the operations were carried out on August 7 and 8 to curb drug abuse and trafficking.
According to him, 34 suspects were arrested during raids on notorious drug spots at Massallacin Idi, Fagge Plaza, Kofar Mata, Kofar Wambai, Kofar Dan’agundi, Makabartar Dan’agundi, Ladanai, Zage, and Tashar Rimi in Rimi Market.
Another 15 suspects were apprehended at Kano Line Motor Park and Tashar Rami Motor Park in Na’ibawa.
Recovered items included cannabis sativa, Pregabalin, diazepam, codeine syrup, Rohypnol, “suck and die,” rubber solution, and locally made weapons.
State Commander Abubakar Idris-Ahmad said the raids were part of efforts to dismantle drug joints and disrupt dealer networks.
He noted that the upgrade of NDLEA operations to a strategic command level had significantly improved the agency’s effectiveness.
He commended NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba-Marwa, for his steadfast support, which he said had strengthened the fight against drug abuse.
Idris-Ahmad warned drug traffickers to desist, stressing that the agency would not relent in its mission to achieve a drug-free society.
He added that investigations were ongoing and the suspects would be prosecuted upon completion.
