The Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) has donated 317,882 Mathematics and English textbooks, written in Hausa, to the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to strengthen literacy and numeracy among primary five and six pupils.
The UK-funded programme is targeting six intervention Local Government Areas—Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Jaba, Sanga, Soba, and Sabon Gari. The books were officially distributed on Wednesday by SUBEB’s Acting Executive Chairman, Mubarak Muhammad, who said the use of Hausa aligns with the state’s policy of teaching in mother tongue to improve learning outcomes.
He noted that thousands of textbooks for primary one to four pupils had already been distributed in recent months, adding that over 150,000 additional core textbooks in literacy and numeracy would soon arrive.
Muhammad also highlighted SUBEB’s teacher development drive, with more than 26,000 educators trained in leadership, ICT, science, and mathematics.
He assured that the state government, under Governor Uba Sani, was prioritizing education and improving teachers’ welfare.
PLANE’s State Team Lead, Diana Agabi, represented by Musa Jimoh, praised Kaduna’s commitment to creating an enabling learning environment, while local education officials, including Kaduna North’s Fatima Sani, commended the support and pledged judicious use of the books.
