Suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Thursday ambushed a commercial bus along the Maiduguri–Banki road, leaving five passengers injured.
Security sources said the attack occurred at about 2:30 p.m. in Wudila, a deserted village near Banki.
The terrorists opened fire on a Toyota Hiace bus (registration number ASU-255-XA) driven by 50-year-old Mustapha Adam, who sustained a gunshot wound to the back.
Other victims were identified as Musa Mohammed, 41, who suffered bullet wounds to his left hand; Mohammed Bukar Gaji, 61, who fractured his hand after falling from the vehicle; Modu Usman, 35, from Cameroon, who sustained gunshot injuries to his neck; and Mohammed Adam, 32, who suffered rib injuries.
Troops of Operation Hadin Kai responded to the distress call, but the attackers had already fled before reinforcements arrived.
All victims were evacuated to the FHI 360 Clinic in Banki, where three were treated and discharged, while two remain hospitalised in stable condition.
No fatalities or property losses were reported, and additional troops have been deployed to bolster security along the route.
