A 60-year-old man, Etebet Oyemara, has been confirmed dead in a fire outbreak at his residence in Benin, the capital of Edo State.
The 60-year-old was said to have died in the fire which occurred on Sunday midnight.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the man, who was an usher at a church in the area, died while attempting to salvage property from the raging fire.
One of the tenants disclosed that Oyemara’s wife, who sustained severe burns in the incident, is currently receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
The tenant said the woman and other occupants were trapped indoors as the fire spread rapidly, leaving them with little time to escape.
He said: “While other tenants managed to flee, Oyemara was caught in the inferno in his bid to save household items.

“The blaze, which consumed valuables worth millions, left many tenants homeless.”
The tenants, therefore, appealed to the Edo State Government and well-meaning Nigerians for urgent support.
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident on Tuesday.
