A police officer and a female passenger were killed on Tuesday when a 40-foot container truck overturned on a tricycle at Ijora Causeway, inward Ijora Seven-Up, Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement by its General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki.
He said the truck, with registration number XP 368 AKD, lost control while attempting a dangerous maneuver beneath the Ijora Bridge and capsized on the tricycle, registered KJA 364 QN.
“Regrettably, two passengers, including a serving police officer, were killed instantly,” Bakare-Oki said.
The officer’s body was taken to a Yaba morgue, while relatives of the female victim retrieved her remains from the scene.
LASTMA and emergency responders rescued two other victims, including the tricycle operator, who sustained serious leg fractures.
They were rushed by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) to Jimsan Hospital, Ijora, for urgent treatment.
Security operatives from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri divisions were deployed to prevent angry onlookers from setting the truck ablaze and to protect rescue workers.
Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of the injured.
He praised emergency responders for their swift intervention and urged truck drivers to exercise extreme caution on Lagos roads to avoid similar tragedies.
