The United Nations will on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, mark the 35th International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP), with commemorations scheduled worldwide and in Abuja, Nigeria.
This year’s celebration, themed “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Actions: Our Aspirations, Our Wellbeing and Our Rights,” will spotlight the vital roles older persons play in shaping societies while addressing the challenges they face, particularly in Nigeria.
In a statement, the Global Knights Foundation, a non-profit organisation focused on advocacy, care, and protection of vulnerable and ageing populations, said the Abuja event will bring together experts, advocates, and stakeholders for dialogue and action.
The programme will feature a keynote address by Dr. Musa Bawa, a mentalist, wellness coach, naturopath, and professional mind coach with more than 30 years of experience working with older persons.
Bawa, who is the Founder and Chief Happiness Officer of the HALAL Wellness Club, will open the discussions with insights on ageing, wellness, and rights.
Panelists expected at the event include Mr. Fred Ohwahwa, President of the Just Friends Club of Nigeria; Dr. Hajara Njidda Amoni, Director of Administration at the Made in Nigeria Project Office, SGF; Dr. Umma Umar Mohammed of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA); Prince Emeka Kalu, National President of RATTAWU; and Dr. Ufuoma Omo-Obi, a global health professional and CEO of West and Central Africa Health Options Ltd/Gte.
According to the statement, the Abuja commemoration will focus on practical discussions and policy-oriented conversations to highlight the pressing needs of the elderly in Nigeria, from healthcare access to social inclusion.
The event is scheduled to begin at midday at Suite 004, Sticks and Stones Plaza, 1245 Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja.
“Global Knights Foundation calls on the media, development partners, and the public to join in amplifying the voices of older persons and in advancing their rights, well-being, and aspirations,” the statement added.
