Local government workers in Rivers State have embarked on a seven-day warning strike across the state’s 23 LGAs over alleged non-payment of salaries to more than 300 staff of Emohua Local Government Area.
Announcing the strike in Port Harcourt, the state chairman of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Christopher Paul, accused Emohua council chairman, Dr. Chidi Lloyd, of halting the salaries of workers reinstated by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Paul noted that the affected staff had been receiving their wages until Lloyd’s re-election, warning that the union would launch an indefinite strike if the matter remains unresolved after the warning action.
“We cannot accept a situation where workers who were duly reinstated and paid up till July are suddenly denied their salaries.
“They are our members, and we will protect their rights,” Paul said.
In response, Dr. Lloyd dismissed the allegations, insisting that no genuine Emohua council staff is owed.
He described those protesting as impostors who were never employees of the LGA.
