The Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Mr. Christopher Maikalangu, has directed the immediate suspension and withdrawal of the recently introduced radio and television taxes imposed on residential houses within the council area.
The directive followed widespread public outrage and complaints from residents who described the levy as burdensome and ill-timed.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Kingsley Madaki, the AMAC Chairman announced the decision at the council headquarters, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to policies that prioritize the welfare and concerns of residents.
Maikalangu explained that the initial rollout of the Radio-TV Tax was designed to boost the council’s internally generated revenue for developmental projects such as infrastructure, social amenities, and community improvement initiatives.
However, he admitted that the implementation required more consultation and public awareness to ensure fairness and understanding among stakeholders.
In light of this, the Chairman ordered the council’s Revenue Department to immediately halt all collections of the Radio-TV Tax from residential buildings and to withdraw any demand notices already issued.
He further directed a review of the tax policy to promote transparency and equity, clarifying that going forward, the levy would apply only to commercial establishments—including hotels, restaurants, offices, and other business premises—where the charge can be justified as part of service delivery.
Maikalangu reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to create a business-friendly and livable environment for all, urging residents to continue engaging constructively with the council on policies affecting their daily lives.
“The council will soon release detailed guidelines on the revised tax structure through official channels—our website, social media platforms, and community town hall meetings—to ensure clarity and prevent misunderstanding,” he stated.
The Chairman thanked residents for their feedback and assured them that AMAC remains dedicated to providing quality services anchored on fairness, accountability, and sustainable development.
