Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not worried about the recent defections of its members, insisting that Nigerians want a vibrant multi-party democracy, not a one-party system.
Makinde stated this while addressing journalists after inaugurating the Transportation Subcommittee for the PDP National Convention, scheduled to hold in Ibadan on November 15.
Reacting to the defection of Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Makinde said the PDP had faced numerous challenges since losing power in 2015 but continues to remain resilient and focused on serving Nigerians.
“The PDP has been through a lot since 2015 when we became an opposition party. But we still have experienced people who have led and occupied important positions in this country,” Makinde said.
“Challenges will come and go, but for us as leaders, organizing the party is not an end in itself. The goal is to ensure Nigerians enjoy true democracy and have a party they can relate to.”
He noted that democracy thrives on conflict, dialogue, and resilience, stressing that the PDP will continue to stay focused despite internal or external distractions.
“So, if you say someone is defecting, that doesn’t mean our house is in disarray. Democracy is about conflict and resolution. We must be glad that our party has remained focused on what Nigerians truly want.
“Do Nigerians want a one-party state? The answer is no. They want a multi-party democracy where different ideas can be shared—and that is exactly what PDP stands for,” he added.
Speaking further, the Oyo governor said the PDP is not bothered about defections because the final decision on the 2027 general elections will rest with Nigerians.
“We’re not concerned because the ultimate decider is the Nigerian people,” Makinde said.
“The only time we’ll be worried is when we see hunger defect from the ordinary people on the streets to the APC—then we’ll know it’s time to be concerned.”
