The Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the recent defections of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and his Enugu counterpart, Peter Mbah, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing their exit as a relief rather than a setback.
State PDP Chairman, Yusif Kibiya, in an interview with Vanguard on Wednesday, said the development was expected, alleging that the defections were orchestrated by the APC to weaken opposition ranks.
“It’s not a shocker. We knew they were going.
“We’re glad they’re gone because you can’t work with people playing double-edged politics,” Kibiya said.
He claimed some defectors were either influenced or pressured by the federal government, but insisted the PDP’s strength lies with the people, not political elites.
“The governor is not the electorate.
“The coming election will be Nigerians versus the government, not PDP versus APC,” he stated.
Kibiya maintained that the PDP remains focused on rebuilding and presenting credible candidates for future elections, expressing confidence that Nigerians would ultimately choose the opposition.
“Let all the governors join APC; I don’t even see how that party will function,” he added.
The chairman argued that internal disputes were normal in every party and predicted a looming crisis within the APC.
“There are people who betrayed the PDP thinking it was dead, but where are they now? Wait for the time.
“APC will explode of course, it will explode,” Kibiya declared.
