The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained the events leading to the death of one Endurance Udeke, a resident of Periwinkle Estate, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, during a sting operation carried out by its operatives on November 4, 2025.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC said its operatives were in the estate to execute a lawful operation that resulted in the arrest of four suspected internet fraudsters.
According to the statement, Udeke and another resident of apartment W6a attempted to evade arrest by jumping from a four-storey building.
While the second resident survived after receiving medical treatment, Udeke died despite efforts to save his life.
“The Commission, as a responsible law enforcement agency, contacted Udeke’s family and provided details of the incident, including the medical interventions made to rescue him.
“The family appreciated the Commission’s efforts,” the statement read.
The EFCC described the incident as tragic, noting that there was no physical contact between its officers and the deceased before he jumped.
It added that the matter had been reported to the Police, who have since commenced an investigation.
While expressing shock over the incident, the Commission urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasizing that “no one with nothing to hide has reason to be afraid of EFCC operations.”
