Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF), North East Operation Hadin Kai, have rescued 74 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from a potential abduction by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Borno State.
Sources confirmed that the corps members — 36 males and 38 females — were rescued at about 9:05 p.m. on Tuesday after their vehicles broke down near a notorious kidnapping hotspot.
The rescue followed alerts from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system monitored by troops, which detected suspicious movement involving three buses at the location.
A military patrol was promptly deployed to the scene.
“On arrival, troops discovered 74 NYSC members stranded due to vehicle breakdowns.
“They were immediately rescued to prevent a likely abduction attempt by Boko Haram or ISWAP elements operating in the area,” the sources said.
Reports indicated that the corps members were initially escorted by the 7 Division Garrison from Maiduguri to Damaturu.
However, after reaching Damaturu, they reportedly continued their journey to Hawul Local Government Area without notifying Sector 2 Headquarters or arranging an armed escort.
The corps members were on an evangelical mission to Hawul when the incident occurred.
They are currently being accommodated at the Buratai military base pending arrangements for their safe onward movement.
