The United States has pledged continued support for Nigeria in its efforts to combat terrorism, following a high-level security meeting at the Pentagon on November 20.
The meeting, hosted by US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, was attended by a Nigerian delegation led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
The discussions coincided with deliberations in the US Congress regarding alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
According to a statement by Sean Parnell, Assistant to the US Secretary of War for Public Affairs, both sides explored strategies to achieve “tangible progress on stopping violence against Christians in Nigeria and combatting West African jihadist terrorist groups.”
The statement noted that Secretary Hegseth stressed the importance of Nigeria demonstrating commitment through urgent and sustained action to halt violence against Christians.
He also conveyed the US Department of War’s intention to work collaboratively with Nigeria to deter and weaken terrorist groups that pose threats to both nations.
The meeting underscores ongoing US-Nigeria cooperation in addressing security challenges in West Africa.
