Matthew Ashimolowo, founder of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), has called on the Federal Government to integrate security training into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme to help combat rising insecurity in Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Ashimolowo suggested that NYSC members be trained to detect and respond to potential threats, even minor offences, to strengthen national security.
He urged Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to enhance policing and the deployment of soldiers, emphasizing the importance of citizen participation in safeguarding the country.
Highlighting Nigeria’s youth as a critical resource, Ashimolowo proposed adopting a model similar to Israel, where young citizens serve in the military from ages 18 to 22.
He said such training would raise awareness, vigilance, and the overall security level.
While supporting the idea of state police, the cleric cautioned that it could be misused by some leaders as a personal army.
He stressed that security is a shared responsibility and urged Nigerians to unite in building a safer, proud nation.
