The Nigeria Police Force has ordered disciplinary action against an officer captured on video allegedly extorting money from a motorcyclist, the force has confirmed.
In a viral video circulating online, a uniformed policeman — reportedly in Cross River State — is seen stopping a motorcyclist by the roadside and demanding cash.
The footage also shows the officer counting the money as the rider looks on.
Responding to the viral footage, the Police Complaint Response Unit (@PoliceNG_CRU) posted on X that the video is authentic and that the officer involved, along with his Divisional Police Officer, has been summoned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.
The force’s announcement underscores a commitment to address allegations of bribery and misconduct within its ranks.
This incident comes amid ongoing concerns about corruption and improper behaviour by some police personnel, prompting public calls for greater accountability.
