The Ondo State Government has sealed off a two-storey building under construction that collapsed at the Adegbola area of Akure, the state capital.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the building caved in at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, leaving several construction workers injured.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Sunday Olajide, ordered the immediate closure of the site during an inspection visit on Tuesday evening, accompanied by officials of the ministry.
Olajide said the state government had launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse, noting that the findings would guide measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He cautioned developers and building contractors against the use of substandard materials, warning that such practices could lead to avoidable loss of lives and property.
“This incident is a reminder to all developers and contractors to obtain the necessary permits and approvals before starting any construction and to strictly adhere to approved standards throughout the building process,” the commissioner said.
While expressing concern over the injuries sustained by some of the workers, Olajide confirmed that no life was lost in the incident.
He added that although the site had been sealed, further actions would be taken depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
