Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has inaugurated the reconstruction and upgrading of the 60-kilometre internal road network at the main campus of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, the governor said the project would include proper drainage systems, street lighting, pedestrian walkways and disability-accessible routes, stressing that safety and inclusiveness are central to the design.

Although ABU is a federal institution, Governor Sani said his administration is committed to supporting educational development, describing investment in education as an investment in the future.

“We believe that removing barriers to learning and improving the daily lives of students, staff and host communities is essential. We will continue to partner with institutions—federal or state—because an educated populace is the surest path to prosperity, security and good governance,” he said.

The governor explained that the road project reflects his administration’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure that supports teaching, research and learning at one of Nigeria’s most historic universities.

According to him, the project goes beyond road construction, focusing on safety, accessibility and dignity. He noted that improved internal roads would ease access for emergency and service vehicles, enhance campus security, and facilitate smoother movement for students and staff.

Governor Sani assured that the project would be executed with high engineering standards, durable materials and effective stormwater management, in line with environmental sustainability.

He added that a modern road network would make it easier for the university to host conferences, convocations and other academic events, attracting visitors, partnerships and investment to Kaduna State.

The governor also highlighted the socio-economic benefits of the project, saying it would create jobs for artisans and labourers, thereby boosting economic activities in Sabon Gari, Zaria and surrounding communities.

He described ABU Zaria—named after the first Premier of Northern Nigeria—as a historic institution that has produced generations of leaders, professionals and scholars who continue to shape the nation.

In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmed, described the governor’s intervention as timely, strategic and compassionate.

He thanked Governor Sani for the land grants provided to the university to support staff housing, noting that the gesture would improve staff welfare, boost morale and enhance institutional stability and long-term sustainability.

Professor Ahmed also commended the governor’s inclusive leadership style, marked by empathy, generosity and foresight, saying it has helped restore confidence, promote stability and renew hope across Kaduna State within just two years.

He added that institutions like ABU are direct beneficiaries of the governor’s approach to governance.
