The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to run a degree programme in Nigeria.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, announced the development in a statement on Thursday, January 29, 2026, describing the agreement as a major step forward for Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
Alausa noted that the MoU was signed at the UNILAG auditorium on Thursday under Nigeria’s transnational education framework.
The minister said the partnership would expand access to internationally recognised academic programmes, enhance skills development, and position Nigeria as a centre for academic excellence, research and innovation.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the National Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) and reflects President Bola Tinubu’s vision of education as a foundation for national development and youth empowerment.
Lagos pledges support for NCC to drive economic growth
Alausa stated: “On behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Education, I joined the University of Lagos and the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, in signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding under Nigeria’s Transnational Education framework.
“This partnership expands access to globally recognised programmes, strengthens skills development, and positions Nigeria as a hub for academic excellence, research, and innovation.
“It seamlessly aligns with our National Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) and reflects the vision of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who has consistently affirmed that education is the bedrock of national development and that our youth remain the heartbeat of the nation.”
The minister commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, Prof. Adam Tickell, and the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, as well as the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and TETFund for their efforts in advancing the collaboration.
He added: “I also acknowledge the presence of the Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, underscoring the strength of our growing international partnerships.
“Together, we are opening new opportunities for Nigerian students and strengthening the future of higher education in Nigeria. 🇳🇬🎓”
