Nigerian nationals applying for United Kingdom visit visas will begin receiving electronic visas (eVisas) instead of physical visa stickers from February 25, 2026, as the UK government moves to fully digitise its border and immigration system.
Under the new system, successful applicants will no longer have vignette stickers placed in their passports. Instead, they will access their visa electronically through an online account managed by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), marking a major shift in the UK’s visa processing framework.
Despite the change in format, the application process and eligibility requirements remain the same. Applicants will still submit their forms, attend Visa Application Centres to provide biometric information, and meet all existing criteria. The only difference is that their immigration status will be issued digitally rather than as a physical document.
UKVI clarified that Nigerians who already hold valid vignette stickers do not need to take any action, as their visas will remain valid until expiration or replacement is required.
Officials say the transition to eVisas will speed up passport returns, allow travellers to manage their immigration status online at any time, and enhance security since digital visas cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with.
Welcoming the development, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Gill Lever, said the move would simplify travel for Nigerians.
“We are committed to making it easier for Nigerians to travel to the UK. This move to digital visas will streamline a key part of the visa process, making it more secure while reducing dependence on paper documents. We look forward to continuing to welcome Nigerian visitors, students and workers to the UK,” she said.
Applicants whose visas are approved will be required to create a free UKVI account to access their eVisa before travelling to the United Kingdom.
