There was tension on Saturday at Polling Unit 141, LEA Primary School, Karamajiji, in Gwarinpa, as suspected political thugs were seen around the premises while electoral officials struggled to commence voting in the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections.
Election materials reportedly arrived at about 9:03 a.m., but accreditation and voting were delayed for more than an hour, with verification beginning around 10:10 a.m.
Although security personnel were deployed to the polling centre, voters raised concerns over the presence of suspected thugs and party agents loitering within and around the venue.
Some residents who spoke anonymously said the situation created anxiety among early voters who had arrived before the scheduled start time.
As of the time of reporting, accreditation was ongoing under heavy security, with voters expressing hope that the exercise would proceed peacefully despite the tense atmosphere.
