Veteran Nollywood actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, widely recognised for playing the iconic character in the television series Papa Ajasco & Company, has opened up about the financial difficulties he has experienced despite decades in the entertainment industry.
Speaking in a recent interview, Ayoyinka revealed that he earned ₦22,500 per episode during the peak years of the popular comedy show produced by Wale Adenuga.
According to the actor, his current earnings from the series range between ₦45,000 and ₦60,000 per episode. However, he explained that the programme records only a limited number of episodes each year, making it difficult for him to maintain a stable income.
Ayoyinka also raised concerns about restrictions attached to the character he portrays. He explained that the “Papa Ajasco” name and costume are registered trademarks owned by Wale Adenuga Productions, meaning he cannot use the character for personal endorsements or public appearances without the company’s approval.
“That character is a very strong character. Anyone that wants to use me outside wants me as Papa Ajasco, but I cannot use the name or costume without permission,” he said.
The veteran actor further disclosed that despite his long-standing career in the industry, he currently does not own a house or a car.
“I don’t have a car of my own. I don’t have a house of my own,” he said.
Ayoyinka, who retired from the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture about five years ago, noted that his experience reflects the financial challenges many veteran performers continue to face in Nigeria’s film and television industry.
