Former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, has called on the Federal Government to prioritise national security over political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections, following Monday’s explosions in Maiduguri.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Ndume, who represents Borno South, urged the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to focus on governance, particularly the protection of lives and property, which he described as the primary duty of government.
“The people that will vote are dying,” Ndume said, expressing deep concern over ongoing killings in the North-East and other parts of the country by insurgents and bandits.
He also called for urgent action to track down those responsible for the Maiduguri bombings and to intensify intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks.
Ndume highlighted that several people remain missing following the Ngoshe massacre, stressing the need for decisive security measures.
While sympathising with the Borno State Government and families of the victims, he criticised what he described as an inadequate response from the presidency.
“If President Tinubu cannot visit Borno, he should send Vice President Kashim Shettima to assure Nigerians that the government cares about their plight,” he said.
The lawmaker reiterated the need for stronger security interventions to curb rising violence and restore public confidence.
