The Kano State Government has paid N32 billion of the N48 billion gratuity and death benefits backlog it inherited from the Abdullahi Ganduje administration, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said on Wednesday.
Yusuf made the disclosure while flagging off the sixth tranche of N5 billion in payments to retired civil servants in the state, bringing cumulative disbursements to N32 billion since his administration took office in May 2023.
“When we came in, we inherited a N48 billion backlog of gratuity and death benefits from the previous administration. With the payment of this sixth tranche of N5 billion, we have now paid N32 billion,” the governor said.
He pledged to clear the outstanding N16 billion before the end of the year, describing the settlements as essential to restoring the dignity and trust of retirees and their families.
“The settlement of these outstanding gratuities and death benefits not only alleviates the hardship faced by affected families but also reaffirms our administration’s promise to restore trust in government and uphold social justice,” Yusuf said.
He commended the Nigeria Union of Pensioners for its patience and cooperation throughout the process.
Several retirees who spoke at the event expressed gratitude to the governor and pledged their support ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
