Two undergraduates have lost their lives following a suspected cult-related attack in the Ede area of Osun State.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, reportedly involved a group of about six students who were attacked in their off-campus residence by suspected cultists.
A police source disclosed that the assault was linked to an ongoing rivalry between cult groups in the area. According to the source, the attackers stormed the apartment and assaulted the occupants with dangerous weapons, leaving several of them with serious injuries.
Two of the victims later died from their injuries, while others are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.
An anti-cultism platform, Naija Confra, also confirmed the incident, alleging that members of the Aye confraternity carried out the attack after tracking a suspected Buccaneer member, identified simply as Dara, to the residence.
The platform claimed that multiple occupants of the apartment, including key members of the group, were targeted during the assault, with some left in critical condition.
However, the spokesperson for the state police command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the clash but stated that only one fatality had been officially recorded. He added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The development comes months after police arrested suspected cultists linked to violent clashes in the Ilesa area of the state.
