Five police officers linked to the alleged killing of Delta-based musician, Oghenemine Ogidi, have been remanded by a Delta State High Court sitting in Asaba.
The officers — ASP Usman Nuhu, ASP Onoloko Dauroupamo, ASP Okoh Kelechi, Inspector Goodluck Kingsley, and Inspector Omonigho Ahweyevu — were arraigned on Monday before Justice Marshal Onome Umukoro in a case marked THC/ASB/CR/M/66C/2026.
The court ordered that the defendants be held at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre pending further proceedings. The matter was adjourned to June 15 for fresh arraignment after the court requested legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Journalists were not allowed into the courtroom during the session.
Reacting after the hearing, human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu described the development as a step forward in the pursuit of justice. He confirmed that the court directed the continued detention of the suspects while the DPP reviews the case, expressing hope that the trial would commence without delay.
Gwamnishu, however, raised concerns about transparency, noting that the deceased’s family had yet to receive the autopsy report or official updates on the investigation. He also alleged efforts to limit public access to court proceedings, adding that future hearings may be conducted virtually, with the suspects appearing from custody.
Family members of the deceased also expressed frustration over poor communication from authorities. A cousin, Alex Emuobor, said they were not properly informed about the court session and only learned of it through unofficial channels. According to him, the family arrived after proceedings had ended, leaving them disappointed.
Similarly, the victim’s elder brother, Victory Ogidi, criticised the lack of direct updates, saying the family had been relying on social media and third-party sources for information. He urged the Delta State Ministry of Justice, the Attorney-General, and the Nigeria Police to ensure transparency and keep the family adequately informed.
Oghenemine Ogidi, popularly known as OG Millan, was reportedly shot on April 26 in Effurun. He was said to have been intercepted by police while attempting to waybill a package allegedly containing a firearm and ammunition.
The incident sparked widespread outrage following the circulation of a viral video showing the alleged shooting, with rights groups and members of the public continuing to demand accountability and justice.
