The Lagos State Government has sealed a property in Ikoyi for allegedly discharging untreated sewage into a nearby canal through a non-functional sewage treatment plant.
The enforcement, carried out on Wednesday by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, followed complaints from residents and investigations that confirmed the environmental violations.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development in a post on his official X account, stating that the affected property is located at No. 5 Manuwa Street, Ikoyi.
According to Wahab, the premises were sealed for the continuous discharge of untreated sewage into the canal through a moribund sewage treatment facility.
He added that the property was also found to be in an unsanitary condition, creating offensive odours, environmental pollution and potential health risks to residents.
The commissioner said the action followed verified complaints from members of the public and investigations conducted by the state’s environmental authorities.
Wahab urged property owners and residents to adhere to approved wastewater management standards, warning that those who violate environmental regulations would face sanctions and possible prosecution.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and protecting public health by maintaining a clean and safe environment across Lagos.
