The Majority Leader of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Saleh Hodi Jibir, has resigned his membership of the legislature to contest the chairmanship of Shira Local Government Area under the Allied People’s Movement.
Jibir, who represents Disina Constituency, announced his resignation during Wednesday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Abubakar Y. Suleiman.
He had served as Majority Leader since the inauguration of the 10th Assembly in 2023, following his election on March 23, 2023.
The Speaker told lawmakers that Jibir’s resignation followed the decision of the APM to nominate him as its candidate for the forthcoming local government election in Shira.
In his farewell address, Jibir thanked stakeholders in Shira for selecting him as the party’s candidate and expressed appreciation to Governor Bala Mohammed for the confidence and support he received during his time in the Assembly.
He pledged to work to exceed the expectations of residents if elected chairman of the local government.
Jibir also thanked the Speaker and his colleagues for their cooperation, guidance and support throughout his tenure in the House.
Suleiman described his relationship with the outgoing majority leader as extending beyond parliamentary duties, saying the two had worked together since the Ninth Assembly and developed a bond akin to that of biological brothers.
Other lawmakers commended Jibir for his patience, dedication and selfless service, saying his contributions had earned him the respect of members.
Following his resignation, the APM nominated Auwal Hassan Yana, representing Shira Constituency, as the new Majority Leader.
The House subsequently approved Jibir’s resignation and Yana’s emergence as his successor.
In his acceptance speech, Yana thanked the party leadership, Governor Mohammed and his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to build on Jibir’s achievements and called for the support, guidance and constructive criticism of fellow lawmakers as he assumes the leadership position.
