Nigerian singer Omah Lay has revealed that he no longer pressures himself to quit smoking after several unsuccessful attempts to give up the habit.
The singer made the disclosure during a recent appearance on the Zach Sang Show, where he discussed his relationship with smoking and his decision to accept the habit as part of his lifestyle.
Omah Lay admitted that he enjoys smoking and had previously tried to stop but struggled to maintain the decision.
“I love smoking a lot. I tried to stop; I forced myself but I can’t,” he said.
The “Godly” crooner explained that he eventually stopped putting pressure on himself to quit, saying his outlook on life influenced his decision.
“Life is one,” he said, adding that everyone would eventually die.
Omah Lay said he now prioritises peace of mind rather than constantly battling himself over the habit.
“I just want to be at peace and smoke my weed,” he said.
The singer also discussed the social and legal implications of marijuana use in Nigeria, where cannabis remains illegal.
He said young Nigerians who smoke can feel criminalised because of the drug’s legal status.
“And the fact that it is illegal in Nigeria. When you smoke weed as a young boy in Nigeria, you feel like a criminal,” he said.
Omah Lay described the feeling he experiences from smoking as “artificial happiness” but acknowledged that the effect is temporary.
He said he had reached a point where he wanted to accept his lifestyle and enjoy his life rather than continue forcing himself to change.
“This is it. This is my life. I will just live it. I will enjoy every single thing that I have,” he said.
