More than 20 people have reportedly been killed in a fresh attack on Binper community in Bwai District of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The attackers reportedly stormed the community around midnight and continued their assault into the early hours of Tuesday, targeting residents in their homes.
The National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, Bulus Dabit, confirmed the incident, while an eyewitness, Daniel Musa, said the attackers were heavily armed.
Musa said the assailants moved from one house to another, forcing their way inside and attacking residents who were asleep.
“Our village came under attack last night and in the early hours of today, Tuesday. Heavily armed persons were moving from house to house, opening the doors of people who were sleeping and slaughtering them,” he said.
He said more than 20 people had been confirmed dead as of Tuesday morning, while several others sustained serious injuries.
Musa added that some residents were still missing, raising fears that the death toll could increase as searches continue.
The incident comes days after three people were killed in the area, amid renewed tension between Fulani and Mwaghavul communities, which have also exchanged accusations over arson.
The latest attack has further heightened security concerns in Mangu, which has experienced recurring violence in recent years.
Security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the attack or confirm the reported casualty figure as of the time of filing this report.
