Nigeria’s journalism industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Dotun Oladipo, publisher and Chief Executive Officer of The Eagle Online, at the age of 56.
Oladipo reportedly died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after he was suddenly taken ill.
Sources familiar with his final hours said the veteran journalist was at his office when he developed health complications. He reportedly drove himself to a hospital but suffered a suspected cardiac arrest while receiving medical attention.
His sudden death reportedly shocked colleagues, friends and associates, as he had appeared well earlier in the day and continued with his normal activities.
Oladipo was said to have visited a gym with his wife earlier on Tuesday before returning to work. He was also active on social media, with his final known post reportedly made around 2:50pm, only hours before news of his death began circulating.
The circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear as of the time of filing this report, while his family had yet to issue an official statement.
Oladipo was the founder and CEO of Premium Eagle Media Limited, the parent company of The Eagle Online, a digital news platform he established in January 2011.
He was among the Nigerian journalists who embraced online publishing at a relatively early stage of the country’s digital media evolution, helping to establish internet-based journalism as an alternative to conventional print and broadcast platforms.
Under his leadership, The Eagle Online developed into a general-interest news platform covering politics, business, crime, sports, health, entertainment, religion, lifestyle and other national issues.
His career spanned several years in journalism and media management, during which he became known for his involvement in the growth of Nigeria’s online news sector.
Oladipo’s death has since prompted an outpouring of grief among journalists, media executives, friends and other associates, who described his passing as a major loss to the Nigerian media industry.
