The Federal University of Technology, Babura, Jigawa State, has introduced a full tuition waiver for newly admitted students studying Mathematics and Physics.
The university said the initiative is designed to make science education more accessible while encouraging more young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical sciences.
The institution’s Registrar, Mrs Fatima Muhammad, announced the policy in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Under the scheme, students admitted into the B.Sc Mathematics and B.Sc Physics programmes will pay no tuition or other school fees throughout the duration of their studies, according to the university.
The management said the decision was prompted by the shortage of skilled science professionals in Nigeria and the need to increase enrolment in disciplines considered essential to technological advancement and innovation.
The registrar described the waiver as part of the university’s community service initiative, particularly aimed at expanding access to science education for students from northern Nigeria and other underserved communities.
“Beneficiaries will enjoy 100% waiver of tuition and school fees,” Muhammad said.
The university also opened the opportunity to qualified candidates who initially selected different courses or institutions but now wish to study Mathematics or Physics at FUT Babura.
Such candidates, it said, can change their institution and course through any JAMB Computer-Based Test centre, provided they meet the admission requirements.
The institution urged interested applicants to contact its admissions office for information on eligibility, the change-of-course procedure and other admission requirements.
The university said the programme would contribute to national efforts to strengthen STEM education and produce graduates capable of supporting research, teaching and industrial development.
The tuition waiver takes effect from the current admission cycle.
